Maldives
More Ocean Than Land: A Living Marine Laboratory
When most people think of the Maldives, they think of postcards. But for our nature campers, the Maldives is something much bigger: it is a vast, interconnected blue ecosystem where human life and marine life have thrived together for thousands of years.
To truly understand our nature camps, it helps to understand the incredible environment we call home.
The Geography of our Ecosystem
- 99% Ocean, 1% Land:The Maldives is made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands grouped into 26 natural ring-shaped atolls. We don't just live by the ocean; we live in it.
- The Coral Foundation: Every single island in the Maldives was built over millions of years by tiny living creatures: coral polyps. Our islands are entirely made of coral sand, surrounded by shallow, protective lagoons that act as natural nurseries for thousands of marine species.
- A Biodiversity Hotspot waters are a global sanctuary for marine life. From massive, gentle whale sharks and manta rays to sea turtles, playful dolphins, and thriving coral gardens, the Maldives is a living classroom where nature lessons happen in real-time.
Our Island Culture & Heritage
Maldivian history is deeply shaped by the rhythm of the ocean and the monsoons (Iruvai and Hulhangu). For generations, our ancestors lived in perfect balance with the reef:
- Traditional Dhoni Building: Crafting vessels perfectly shaped to ride the unique ocean swells.
- Sustainable Fishing: Using traditional pole-and-line methods that protect the reef ecosystem rather than destroying it.
Our nature camps blend this ancient ancestral knowledge with modern marine science, teaching the next generation how to be true stewards of the islands.
