The 6-Day Academy Itinerary Day 1: The Anatomy of a Vessel & Material Selection The Blueprint: Introduction to the unique hydrodynamics of the Maldivian Dhoni. Understanding how it glides effortlessly over shallow patch reefs and handles deep ocean swells. Ethnobotany Field Track: A guided exploration of local coastal forestry. Students learn to identify traditional timbers, studying the grain, strength, and ecological selection of local wood. Sensory Grounding: A screen-free evening gathering to understand the philosophical bond between the shipwright and the living forest. Day 2: The Workshop of the Maavadhiyaa (Master Craftsman) Master Mentorship: Entering the traditional shipyard. Students are introduced to the master tools of the trade, learning the safety, grip, and tactile feedback of traditional woodworking instruments. The Keel (Maanbila): Laying the foundational spine of the vessel. Students assist in the measuring and alignment of the primary timber, learning how stability is engineered from the ground up. Day 3: The Geometry of the Bow (Kamana) Ancestral Mathematics: Discovering how the iconic, graceful curve of the Dhoni bow is achieved purely by eye and custom measuring cords, completely independent of modern computer-aided design (CAD). Hands-on Shaping: Under close master supervision, students work on shaping and bending structural ribs, understanding how steam, oil, and grain orientation allow rigid wood to curve. Day 4: Planking, Joinery & Sustainable Systems The Planking Process: Learning the precise art of fitting hull planks seamlessly together using traditional wooden dowels rather than modern metallic nails. Natural Sealing: Exploring ancestral island chemistry by working with organic resins and coconut-derived extracts used to waterproof the hull, ensuring zero chemical runoff into our fragile reef ecosystems. Day 5: Rigging, Sails & Ancestral Navigation Rigging Mechanics: Transitioning from the hull to the wind. Students learn traditional knotting, rope-making from coconut husk fibers (Roanu), and the mechanics of sail placement. The Wayfinder’s Sky: An evening astronomy session on the shoreline. Students learn how early Maldivian mariners read the stars, ocean swells, and wind currents to navigate the archipelago without digital GPS. Day 6: The Sea Trial & Community Celebration The Launch: The culmination of the cohort's hard work. The finished vessel is structurally checked and ceremonially launched into the turquoise waters of the lagoon. The Trial: Students step aboard to experience the physical feedback of the vessel, testing its balance, rowing mechanics, and responsiveness to the current. Certificates & Boduberu Feast: A celebratory closing ceremony featuring traditional Boduberu drumming alongside our local island mentors, honoring the completion of
