Junior Marine Biologist With Discover Scuba Dive
A 6-Day Experiential Journey into Maldivian Atoll Ecology, Fish Identification, and Marine Conservation
High School Age 14+, 6 Day Nature Camp
Villingili Island, Maldives
A 6 day experiential learning nature session designed to transforms students into junior scientists across Maldivian coastal ecosystems. Guided by expert scientists, kids master field survey techniques, study beach zonation, and learn atoll formation dynamics. Activities include a Discover Scuba Diving(DSD) experience, hands-on coral nursery restoration, underwater fish identification surveys, and final presentations—building teamwork, ocean literacy, and conservation skills.

Itinerary
  • DAY 1 Intertidal Explorers: Students explore Villingili futtaru tidepools, learn zonation, and run real mini-surveys with belt transects like marine biologists in training
    • MORNING focuses on tidepooling at the futtaru side of Villingili, where students safely explore rocky pools and discover common coastal life (algae, nerites, crabs, starfish) while learning about habitats and intertidal zonation (dry → splash zone → shallow water).
    • AFTERNOON shifts into ‘junior scientist mode,’ using two simple belt transects to record what they find and compare results, building real field skills like observation, teamwork, and respectful wildlife handling.
  • DAY 2 Beach Ecosystem Beaches are highly dynamic ecosystems packed with hidden, fascinating life. In this special program hosted by climate adaptation expert and environmental scientist Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed, students will use real scientific methods to discover how buried creatures adapt to crashing waves, map beach zonation, and conduct an active coastal health assessment.
  • DAY 3 Island Formation with Dr. Naseer Explore the formation of atolls and how the Maldives came to be with Dr. Abdulla Naseer. Dr. Naseer is a Maldivian marine scientist, educator, and former Minister of State for Environment. Dr. Naseer, who wrote his PhD on coral reef formation is a leading expert on atoll dynamics, reef mapping, and island formation in the Maldives.
  • DAY 4 Discover Scuba Diving(DSD) With certified instructors, kids take their first steps into scuba diving. They’ll learn about diving gear, practice safety basics, and experience the thrill of diving underwater - an unforgettable introduction to exploring the ocean’s depths.
  • Day 5 Reef Restoration: Apprentice at an active coral nursery to clean frames and study how seabed structural complexity shapes fish diversity.
  • Day 6: Fish ID, Surveying & Presentation Today is all about the reef’s mobile inhabitants. We begin with Fish ID, learning to recognize indicator species that tell us if a reef is healthy. Using underwater slates, students will then conduct a survey noting down fish and invertebrates. By moving slowly and watching quietly, kids learn to document the reef’s life in a purposeful way, turning a normal snorkel into a real "health check" of the reef.
